Summer 2020 means meeting up with your friends in some random places. Last night I met up with a good friend for a socially distanced picnic in an office park parking lot! It was so great to catch up and get out of the house for a while.
One of the things we talked about is that there have definitely been some positives to come out of the past several months.
*touchless pickups and deliveries
*restaurants that wouldn't normally do takeout now offering takeout
*reserving spots for normally crowded places
*fewer people in the grocery stores
*traffic is non-existent
*drive through parties
We also talked about the selfishness and blatant disregard for the current situation that we see some people exhibiting. It's difficult to think about how badly our country responded to this crisis.
Take for instance, the recent debate about college football. Yes, many of us want to watch college football. But, do we need to watch college football? Operating college football right now, with teams traveling around the country for games, is an unnecessary risk. It's also using up testing capacity to run a sport instead of using that testing to help keep students and staff safe. And of course, the number one reason college football shouldn't be happening is to keep athletes safe. New studies and information are showing that several college athletes who suffered from Covid now have a heart condition. With so many unknowns it is important for leaders to step up and make the tough decisions that a student athlete might not be able to make. Rex Chapman hit the nail on the head with this tweet!
